Spring 2012
Charles Street Reconstruction Open House

Dear Neighbors,

The following invitation is being extended to Tuscany Canterbury residents by the Department of Transportation:

You are invited to attend the Charles Street Reconstruction Open House on Thursday, March 15, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, at the Barnes & Noble Johns Hopkins Bookstore, 3330 St. Paul Street.

At this important public meeting you will hear about the project and learn the best ways to get around during the two year period when Charles Street will be closed between 29th Street and West University Parkway. Construction will begin in late March or early April.   Please help to spread the word among your neighbors about this important meeting.

Winter 2012

Website Upgrade

The Tuscany Canterbury Neighborhood Association (TCNA) Board is celebrating by unveiling a new website with the goal of improving communication among TCNA members and the public at large.  As you explore the website you will notice that many parts contain general information about our community that can be of use to current residents or those who are considering a move to Tuscany Canterbury. Other parts of the website are “private.” That is, only TCNA members may gain access by using their User Identification and Password.  One of the key benefits of the new website is the ability of the Membership Committee to automatically alert TCNA members to renew their membership 30 days before it expires.  Additionally, it is possible to pay membership dues on line, although those who prefer to mail a check can continue to renew by this method.  TCNA members may also review recent email alerts that are sent to members by the Board regarding issues of concern:  weather, City government alerts, dumpster dates, crime, and so on.

Please explore the new website and use the “contact us” link, give us feedback.

With best wishes for a Happy New Year!

Sue Talbott, President, on behalf of the TCNA Board of Directors

Fall 2011

By now, the horrific heat of the summer will have passed and soon the leaves on our beautiful trees in Tuscany Canterbury will begin to turn.  This thought leads me to tell you that  Kenna Forsyth and I met with the new City Arborist, Erik Dihle, to talk about the condition of the street trees in Tuscany Canterbury.     He suggested that TCNA do a street tree census that will enable us to make a plan, in concert with the city, to take better care of the street trees, and to identify places in which to plant new trees.    In order to accomplish the street tree census, we need volunteers who will work in teams, in cooperation with Mr. Dihle and his staff.   If you have an interest in this project, please contact me.

Another volunteer activity we hope to sponsor relates to the storm drains that one finds on each street in our community.  If you would be willing to ‘adopt’ a storm drain on your block, to keep it clear of debris, please let me know.   This would be a great project for a parent to do with a school aged child, a good lesson in civic responsibility.  (Yes, I can hear some of you saying:  “this is a job for the City to do, not us, we pay taxes for City services, etc.”.  I agree, but we need to accept the fact that some jobs are not being done due to lack of manpower and so, some of us civic minded citizens need to step up to the plate.)

Many of you have commented on how awful the 39th street  median looks – we agree.  Thanks to TCNA Board member, David Bedingfield,  who is conferring with City agencies, a plan to make this area green again is underway.  Stay tuned.

The  plan for the Roundabout at 39th and Canterbury Road was voted upon and  approved by a large majority at TCNA’s  Annual Meeting last June.  Construction of the Roundabout will begin in the spring  of 2012.

An appeal to dog owners to pick up after their pets is in order, according to neighbors on Tuscany Road.  Remember, there is no “poop fairy” that will swoop in to clean up after your dog!

Work on the new TCNA Website continues…. A new logo will soon appear!  Thanks to Kevin Moore , Andy Parsley and David Bedingfield  for their work to create a new and more user friendly website.   We intend to ‘roll out’ the new website at the November 2nd TCNA  meeting at Calvert School.

Also at the TCNA Fall Meeting, members will be asked to ratify a change in the By-laws that will change the current calendar-year membership (January-December) to a 12 month membership year that will begin with the month that a member joins TCNA.  Kevin Moore has explained that the new website will enable the Membership committee to set up an automatic renewal  reminder system, together with  on-line payment options.

The Membership committee is continuing its campaign to recruit residents of the high rise buildings on Charles Street.  This effort has benefited from a generous donation by Melanie Vaughn, a former member of the Committee.  We appreciate her continuing support of TCNA!

Friends of Stony Run is a new organization that seeks to engage residents of all communities along the Stony Run.  It will take many years and the work of many volunteers to restore the walking path.    I hope that many T-C residents will join and volunteer to take part in various projects. Finally, I would like to welcome two new Board members:  Deborah Rose and Michael Matunis.  Deborah serves on the Membership Committee and Michael on the Traffic and Parking Committee.

I look forward to seeing you on November 1st at the Fall TCNA meeting.
